Experts Acknowledge 4,000 New Cases of FAS Every Year, Says Report

Foetal alcohol syndrome is a severe birth defect that makes infants mentally retarded along with episodes of facial and neural abnormalities as well as malformations of other body parts. The health condition is believed to be triggered by alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

In addition, FAS suffering kids experience problems in almost every sphere of life even in learning, poor coordination skills, complications to memorize things or body malformations.

A Cape Town-based forensic science company in collaboration with a laboratory in UK has expressed enthusiasm to fight against FAS. Consequently, the Tripelo and Trimega laboratories will outline policies in order to acknowledge communities that are likely to reflect higher levels of foetal alcohol syndrome.

According to available statics, experts acknowledge not less than 4,000 new cases of the deadly FAS, annually, across the regions of South Africa. Further, the South Africa was found to rank the top most position for number of FAS cases where Northern Cape and Western Cape has contributed enough to take the country at top.

The Social Development Minister, Bathabile Dlamini, raised concerns over the figures as well as increasing cases. He said: "This is particularly important in vulnerable communities where there is often a lack of information on the dangers of using alcohol during pregnancy".
