MaSisulu - nation mourns a legend

Revolutionary struggle icon MaSisulu is to be laid at rest beside her husband at Croesus Cemetry. For this purpose, gardeners from Johannesburg City Parks pruned trees and construction workers repaved parts of the road leading to the site.

In order to rehearse their procession at the funeral, the soldiers also marched with their blaring sirens. The march will begin from the Orlando stadium, which is 7km away from the cemetery. The 22m long wall behind the cemetery will be covered with ANC flags on the day of the burial.

The cemetery and the grave will be decorated with pink white orange and yellow daisies, as has been discussed with her son Zwelakhe. Landscaper Solly Madutung says that Sisulu roses have been planted around the grave but they haven’t started flowering yet.

Bosmont's RW Fick Senior Secondary School students who were walking home stopped by to take a look at the rehearsal. Nelisiwe Khomalo, student, said that Sisulu would be respected forever. Buses have been arranged to pick up people from the stops early in the morning for the event.
