Milwaukee County Grapples With Crippled Mental Health Reforms

It seems that it won’t be easy for Milwaukee County to get its crippled mental health care reforms rehauled as it failed at various fronts. It has been claimed during the fourth in-depth study on fixing the county's overtaxed programs that a lot needs to be done to improve the country’s mental health care system. A new taskforce in the name of the Mental Health Redesign and Implementation Task Force was made to devise a full fledge strategy to tackle the issue following serious revelations of bungled care.

Even a series of studies were done by two other County Board committees, followed by a review by county auditors and security recommendations from Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr., to make sure that significant efforts are being made to address the percolating concern of mental health care.

It was revealed in a report commissioned by the nonpartisan Public Policy Forum that owing to over dependence on emergency, involuntary commitments coupled with inadequate follow up with discharged patients, a costly revolving-door mental health system has been formed in the county.

Though Supervisor Joe Sanfelippo was satisfied with the performance of the top managers, lack of urgency shown by them has pricked him. Voicing appeal for urgent federal funding, Sanfelippo said, "The system we have is unsustainable”.
