Prisons to consider Selebi’s medical parole request this week

Jackie Selebi, who was slapped with a 15-year jail term for his corrupt practices, could be granted medical parole, the prisons department announced on Saturday.

Spokesperson Zacharia Modise confirmed that the department would respond to Selebi’s medical parole request this week.

Speaking on the topic, Modise said, “The department will respond to the request this week. The director general was on leave and returns to work on Monday, following which we can respond.”

Selebi is very ill and being receiving treatment at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

However, Modice assured that Selebi’s health condition was stable.

Around three weeks back, a group, called "Friends of Jackie Selebi," filed an application with the national commissioner of correctional services for the release of Selebi on medical grounds.
