Scientists Join Crusade Against Academic Publisher Elsevier, Sign Online Petitio

It seems that it would take some more time for the controversy surrounding research journals published by Elsevier would die down as it has been told that there are over 2,700 researchers from around the world who have come out to sign an online petition against the firm.

The petition was told to have been set by Tyler Neylon, a fellow-mathematician at Cambridge University who has expressed his support for boycotting the Journals. It has been known the issue was sparked when Timothy Gowers, a mathematician at Cambridge University posted strong remarks over the issue and from there one, it became a matter of concern for the community.

Dr. Gowers is of the say that there are major three concerns he finds totally unethical with the firm, high rates of products, practice of selling “bundling” journals, which left no options for the libraries to subscribe all journals even if they don’t want to have, and firm’s backing to legislation such as the Research Works Act, a bill now before America’s Congress for the final call.

There are many people who would be joining the crusade against the firm which is told to be managing over 2,000 journals as of now. The critics are of the say that they would not be sending their work to be published in the Elsevier’s journals.

While the firm is trying all possible to make sure that they are being taken in wrong sense by the researchers, there seems to be growing rage among the critics. Even the firm’s support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), PIPA, has made the critics more determined.

"If you would like to declare publicly that you will not support any Elsevier journal unless they radically change how they operate, then you can do so by filling in your details in the box below”, said the petition.
