Experts Back Elderly Care Home Patients and Fight for their Rights

"The formation of relationships, physical intimacy and the expression of sexuality are a basic human right and a normal and healthy part of ageing”. The above recommendations have been written by the authors from the Australian Centre for Evidence-Based Aged Care, who have recently found that majority of older people are not comfortable in performing or enjoying sex when they are in some residential care.

Most of the elderly people enjoy sex while they live at home but same does not remains the fact of their life once they move into any residential care, reports the Australian authors of a paper in the Journal of Medical Ethics.

Some commonly noted issues are: lack of privacy, age discrimination, fears of a legal implication etc. Older people group that is in talks also include ones, who are suffering from dementia or are at early stage of the problem.

The team of experts while acknowledging all the found difficulties argued that the elderly people cannot be denied from their rights no matter whatever the excuse is.

They highlighted the different stages of dementia in elderly people and their capabilities with respect to same to make people understand their disbeliefs and let care home patients also participate in consensual sex.
